What Whois is

Whois is a public protocol used by domain zone registries to publish registration details: the registrar, when the domain was created and until when it is paid for. The query goes directly to the registry of the relevant zone, so the data is current at the time of the lookup.

What the record shows

  • The registrar the domain is registered through
  • Registration date and the end of the paid term
  • Name servers the domain is delegated to
  • Statuses: transfer locks, delegation, holds

What to look out for

  • An expiry date coming up soon: a non-renewed domain is released and can be taken over
  • clientHold or serverHold status — the domain is removed from DNS and does not resolve
  • TransferProhibited — protection against unauthorized transfers; this is normal
  • Owner contact details are redacted in most zones by privacy policies
